Reflection
My seniors have been writing a series of essays and for the reflection, I asked them to write an essay on their thoughts. They had to tell me what they liked most, least, and what they learned from writing the different essays. As I was explaining the outline for the reflection, my mentor snapped this picture. So here I am---teaching!!
Teresa and Kanesha
Two of my seniors immediately got to work on their reflections as soon as I finished giving the instructions. The papers are not due until Friday, but three students have already turned their papers in to me. I believe the students like writing reflections on their work so I may try this more often. They need to be able to see their strengths and weaknesses in their writing.
Jessica and Porsha
These two young ladies (juniors) are working on a rough draft of a Narrative Account. We have been learning different strategies to engage the reader and they are adding ideas and details to their first drafts. The final, published draft will be their nine weeks test and they are working diligently.
Drug Free Week
This young lady is in my homeroom and we decorated our door for Drug Free Week. Our slogan was "Drugs are Retarded--So Don't Get Started!" I took pictures of all my homeroom students and they placed their picture on a notecard. Beside their picture, they had to tell write "Instead of drugs, I like to ....." It was a cute idea and our door looked wonderful! The students were very excited to see their faces posted in the hallway!
Objectives
I write my objectives on the front board every day with the frameworks for the students to see. They are responsible for writing these objectives down in their journal daily. At the end of each week, I check their journals for the objectives and the bell ringer assignment. So far, it has worked out pretty well. At least I know they are looking up there and are prepared to work. We discuss the objectives and the daily plan as the opening part of our lesson.
Word Wall
This is a picture of my word wall. It changes frequently because we use so many vocabulary words each week. I usually introduce the new and unfamiliar words to the students at the beginning of a lesson or reading passage. Then I pick a few students to write the words on post its and place them on the wall. This gives them a visual place to see the words when we use them. Also, when we have tests, I take the words down but I often see the kids look at the wall trying to remember where the words were and what they mean.
My wonderful BAD two year old son!
I love my son, Colin. He is my pride and joy but sometimes he drives me nuts!! This was a good day when he was being a ham for the camera. I took this Saturday off from working on school stuff and played in the leaves with my child! Out of 24 pictures, I probably got 5 where he was not picking his nose or looking the other way!
Student Survey
My students had to take a Needs Assessment Survey on drugs, alchohol, weapons in school, etc. The questions were very interesting!
New Student Paired With Active Listener
I had a new student enter class two days before this activity and she was a bit shy around the class. When I grouped the students together, I made sure I paired her with a student who is outgoing but not overwhelming as a class clown. Also, he tends to keep on task and helps others frequently. She started to come out of her shell by the end of the class period.

- I teach eleventh and twelfth grade English at Hughes High School in Hughes, Arkansas. The school is small, which I enjoy because my classes are small. I graduated from Hughes High School and I am very blessed to be teaching in a community that I love!!
